Military Aviation Academy of General Milan Rastislav Stefanik

GENERAL INFORMATION
The Military Aviation Academy of General M. R. Stefanik in Kosice was established on September 1, 1973 as the
University of Military Aviation of the Slovak National Uprising by the order of the President of the Czechoslovak
Republic No. 08 issued on June 28, 1972. The first stage - from the school establishment to the half of the year
1979 saw the formation of the bases of progressive development of education and airborne training of future pilots,
controllers and members of ground specialisations. On November 1, 1986 the University of Military Aviation of Slovak
National Uprising started programmes for PhD education. After the split of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic
the name of the Military Aviation University of the Slovak National Uprising was changed to the General Milan Rastislav
Stefanik Military University of Aviation by an Act of the Slovak National Council. Since l996 the name has changed
into the Military Aviation Academy of General Milan Rastislav Stefanik.

BACCALAUREATE AND GRADUATE PROGRAMMES
Field of study: Air traffic control (5 years)
Specialisation: Combat aircraft pilot
The undergraduate accomplishes air training in trainers and combat training aircraft and also obtains a civil licence
as a private pilot. The graduates are trained for the position of combat aircraft pilot.
Specialisation: Helicopter pilot
The undergraduate accomplishes air training on helicopters and also obtains a civil licence as a private pilot.
The graduates are trained for the position of a combat helicopter pilot.
Specialisation: Transport aircraft pilot
The undergraduate accomplishes air training on a transport aircraft and obtains the civil licence of a commercial
pilot. The graduate will then be pilot of a commercial aircraft.
Specialisation: On-board navigator
In the course of studies undergraduates perform air navigation training in training- and transport aircrafts. The
graduate will be board navigators of military transport aircrafts.
Field of study: Air traffic control (5 years)
Specialisation: Operation, control and automation of command in aviation.
The students learn to develop projects, to organise and manage combat preparation and combat activities of airborne
units and formations as well as military teams. They also study ways of utilising means of automated systems of
command in order to obtain the necessary information for proper judgement of the situation and making the right
decisions. Students are required to develop textual and graphic documents necessary for aviation management and
safety.
Specialisation: Air traffic control
During the study an undergraduate will be familiarised with ATC and its organisation, air navigation, radiotelephony
procedures and communication, aerodynamics and mechanics of flying, aviation meteorology and will undergo practical
ATC training. Graduates are planned to take navigator operator positions at command and navigation posts and ATC
workplaces within the air force.
Field of study: Aviation mechanical engineering (5 years)
Specialisation: Technical and operational support of aviation
Students are trained to be in command of the main principles of air force combat activity management, construction
and design, operation and service safety principles and safety on the airport with its equipment, organisation
of repairs and air field maintenance, functioning and handling other systems and diagnostic devices. The undergraduate
will have to acquire the necessary theoretical knowledge for ensuring their future position up to the level of
a technical squadron leader and chief maintenance officer.
Specialisation: Engine operation, maintenance and repair
Undergraduate will be acquainted with the aircraft, engine design and structure as well as with the special kinds
of procedures, material preparation and methods of inspection. They will be able to analyse reasons of failure
and determine the sequence of remedy, organise and fix kinds of works and repairs of combat damages. The graduate
will be able to hold all the position in the aviation engineering service ensuring organisation and management
of maintenance and repairs.
Field of study: Aviation Electrotechnics
Specialisation: Ground radiotechnical support
The undergraduates are prepared to ensure safety of running aerodrome landing radar systems, means of radionavigation,
systems of communication and protection of air force command and stations of radiotechnical safety in the aerodrome.
They will be acquainted with contents and scope of technical maintenance of devices.
Specialisation: Avionics and electrical systems
The undergraduates will be acquainted with systems of measuring non-electric quantities, airborne computer technology,
fuselage electromagnetic and engine electric systems of the air-frame, its systems, maintenance, attendance and
repairs.
Specialisation: Aviation weapon system
The undergraduates are prepared for safe operating, maintenance and repairs of cannon, machine-gun, bomber and
special aircraft equipment, guided and non-guided missiles and other weapons, crew rescue systems, infra and laser
sighting systems and on-board computers.
Specialisation: Airborne radio and radiotechnical systems
The undergraduates will be acquainted with the theory of radio and radiolocation reception and transmission, avionics,
radionavigation, radiolocation, radioelectronic countermeasures and electromagnetic co-existence. They will be
prepared to ensure safety of operation, maintenance, and repairs of on-board radionavigation and radiolocating
radiocommunication devices, radiolocating identification and on-board devices of radioelectronic reconnaissance
and jamming.

POSTGRADUATE COURSES
The Military Aviation Academy of Gen. M.R. Stefanik has been accredited by the Ministry of Education and Science
of the Slovak Republic to perform postgraduate programmes and award the academic title of "Doctor" (Dr.)
in the following specialisations:
- 91/04/9 Operational and Combat deployment of Air Force and Air Defence
- 92/07/9 Air Force Armament and Technology
Academic courses
The academic courses represent the best, closed-loop study to prepare the air-force staff members for supreme
operating functions. The aim of academic programmes is to acquaint its participants with the latest scientific
achievements of the aviation technology, board and ground air traffic control, with the introduction of cybernetics
into decision-making by means of organising management activities using economical and also ecological methods
of estimations. The education in the academic courses is for engineers and academic degree-holders so that they
prove their professional level and ability to manage their tasks at higher levels of command at the air force and
the army alike.
Private and commercial pilot licensing
The study consists of theoretical preparation and also of practical flight training in the light of requirements
of the State Aviation Inspection. It is also possible to run courses of aerobatics and other special flight trainings
according to the demands of interested parties. The estimated length of study for sport pilots is 45 hours taking
four months of including both theoretical and practical training. A transport pilot course is planned for 12 months
with 150 hours to fly. The whole study is in full compliance with ICAO regulations.
Civil aircraft maintenance staff licensing
The preparation for obtaining the licence of a technician of aircraft maintenance is aimed at theoretical and
practical problems necessary to the post of an aviation technician. Special emphasis is placed to theory, the principles
activities, airframe, structure, maintenance and repair of individual aircraft systems. The syllabus of the individual
subject is based on the requirements of the State Aviation Inspection on theoretical exams of civil aircraft technicians.
Undergraduates go through the subjects of individual specialisations to meet the requirements of the regulation
L-1 (ability of civil aviation staff) and acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge required for the licence
of staff aircraft maintenance type II. The course takes 24 months.
Conversion courses
Conversion courses for pilots and technicians courses are provided for on almost all types of aircraft. Nowadays
our Academy ensures retraining courses:
- for airplanes: Z-42, L-29, L-39, L-39MS, MiG-21, MiG-29, Su-22, Su-25, L-410, AN-24, AN-26, JAK-40, TU-154,
- for helicopters: Mi-2, Mi-8, Mi-17, Mi-24.
The length of training depends on the type aircraft and it may take from 1 to 6 months.
The Military Aviation Academy of General M.R. Stefanik during the recent years, has completed programmes based
on international agreements for hundreds of international pilots and aviation specialists. This has also been one
of the ways of obtaining valuable experiences in training and teaching in foreign languages, especially in English,
French and German.
Specialists from various air forces studied at the Military Aviation Academy and now are holding important positions
in their country. The Academy is in close co-operation with partner Academies of Air Academy of Luftwaffe in Fuerstenfeldbruck
(Germany), Schools of Aviation in Solon de Provence (France), Zeltweg (Austria), Bracknell (UK), Colorado Springs
(USA), Szolnok (Hungary), Deblin (Poland), Kirovograd and Kharkov (Ukraine), Military Academy in Brno (Czech Republic).
Within a TEMPUS Project, the Academy is in co-operation with Universitaire de Technologie in Lannione, France.
